The Federal Reserve directly controls the monetary base (which includes excess reserves created by QE), the narrowest form of money supply. Due to the horrific levels of deficit spending resulting from the COVID pandemic, it was virtually guaranteed that we would get an inflation problem, with a lag, particularly because much of the deficit spending in 2020 was monetized by the Fed.
