U.S. stocks ended sharply lower in a holiday-shortened session Friday, joining a global selloff sparked by the discovery of a new variant of the coronavirus that causes COVID-19. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -2.53% , which fell more than 1,000 points at its session low, ended around 905 points lower, a drop of 2.5%, near 34,899, according to preliminary figures, while the S&P 500 SPX, -2.27% finished down around 107 points, or 2.3%, near 4,595.
