Stocks opened lower, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 pulling back modestly from record levels scored last week, after weaker-than-expected economic data out of China over the weekend and a fall Monday in the New York Fed’s Empire State index of regional activity. Investors were also weighing news reports indicating Federal Reserve officials could move to begin tapering monthly asset purchases by November, as well as the Taliban’s seizure of control in Afghanistan over the weekend.
